A native of Italy, Abbate came to Richmond in 2004 and she joined the School of World Studies as an Italian instructor, and since 2008 she has been the coordinator of the Italian language courses.

Abbate grew up in a small historical town in Italy, Fondi, situated half way between Rome and Naples. Her academic interests range from European history and philosophy, to Italian as a second language, to social studies on school dispersal and students’ guidance.
