A native of Germany, Mareike Müller joined VCU’s School of World Studies in 2014. She teaches across the curriculum in the German program, including both German language classes from first to third year and upper-level seminars in linguistics and cultural studies. In addition, Dr. Müller serves as a Foreign Language Coordinator in the School of World Studies, overlooking the German program in particular.

Dr. Müller’s research focuses on second language acquisition and foreign language education. Her primary research interest in the areas of study abroad and learner identity has been coupled, for example, with aspects of pronunciation, cultural learning, the native-speaker ideal, and translingual/transcultural competence in her publications. She has received several awards for her work from, among others, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the Canadian Association of University Teachers of German.
