An American Pontiff: Assessing the First Months and Contemplating the Future of Pope Leo XIV

Professor G. Antonio Espinoza of the Department of History interviews Professor R. Andrew Chesnut, Bishop Walter F. Sullivan Chair in Catholic Studies of the School of World Studies, on the unique papacy of a polyglot American cardinal who holds dual citizenship and brings two decades of mission work in Peru to his stewardship of 1.4 billion Catholics. A Q&A between Drs. Espinoza and Chesnut, and also with the audience, will illuminate the major opportunities and challenges for "Pope Bob," the first American pontiff.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Antonio EspinozaAntonio Espinoza, Ph.D., studies the intersection of politics, society and education in modern Latin America. He is the author of “Education and the State in Modern Peru” and has published more than a dozen articles and book chapters on intellectual and educational history in Peru and Latin America.

 

Andrew ChesnutAndrew Chesnut, Ph.D., has been publishing scholarship for more than 20 years. His most recent book, "Devoted to Death: Santa Muerte, the Skeleton Saint," is the first in-depth study of the Mexican folk saint in English. In addition to writing several books and numerous journal articles, he has contributed his expertise on Catholicism, particularly in Latin America, to a wide range of international media outlets.
