Bio

Indira Sultanić, Ph.D., is a Certified Healthcare Interpreter™, and has worked in the language industry as a Project Manager, translator, as well as a medical and community interpreter for over 10 years. In 2018, she served as a volunteer Subject Matter Expert and participated in the development of CCHI’s (Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters) national certification exams and contributed to a national, valid, credible, and vendor-neutral certification program for healthcare interpreters. Her teaching expertise include medical, legal, and community interpreting, Spanish - English translation, and Language for Special Purposes (LSP). Sultanić has also taught Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) Tools at a graduate level. Her current research focuses on medical interpreter training, interpreter readiness for the hospital environment, translation and interpreting pedagogy, language access, language industry, curriculum design and development, and service-learning. Her other research interests include language policy, health literacy, interpreting for survivors of trauma and torture, interpreting for underage clients in community and legal settings, end of life and pastoral care interpreting, identity translation and diaspora, and interpreters as advocates.
