Bio

Vesely's work centers on ethics and biblical interpretation with a specific focus on the wisdom literature of the Hebrew Bible. She is the author of "Friendship and Virtue Ethics in the Book of Job" (Cambridge University Press, 2019). She is currently working on a book that explores the language of character in the Hebrew Bible.

Her additional interests include gender and religion, the role of tragedy in moral formation, and interfaith ethics. She also is keenly interested in ancient languages and teaches biblical Hebrew at Union Seminary. Vesely is proficient in biblical Greek and Aramaic and has studied classical Arabic, Ugaritic, Moabite, and Phoenician, as well. When she is not busy teaching or writing, you may find her at the Richmond Ballet, where she works as an accompanist.
